The Russellville Golden Tigers clinched their third straight appearance in the AHSAA Class 5A Baseball Championship Series with a sweep of Ardmore 6-0 and 7-3. The win sets up a rematch of last year’s series with Faith Academy.
In game one, Cody Greenhill notched his eleventh win of the season and thirty-eighth of his career in a six inning shutout. Rudy Fernandez came on in relief in the top of the 7th inning.
In game two, Chad Wray improved his record to 8-3 with a six inning performance of his own. Fernandez would come on and finish the game once again.
The state championship series against Faith Academy will begin Wednesday night at 6pm at Patterson Field in Montgomery. Game two will be played on Thursday morning at 10am at Riverwalk Stadium. If necessary, game three will follow at 1pm at Riverwalk.
In last year’s series, Faith took game one from the Golden Tigers, but the champs rallied to win the final two games to clinch their second consecutive state title. This series looks to be just as hard fought as the Golden Tigers look to bring home their third straight Blue Map.
Superintendent Heath Grimes has announced that school will dismiss on Wednesday at 11:30am and will not be in session on Thursday to allow students and teachers the opportunity to go support the baseball team in Montgomery.
