Going into his thirteenth year at RHS, Coach Tony Buckhalter has been a major part of the success the football program has achieved during that time period. Coach Buck has served as the football team’s strength coach during that time along with fulfilling his other duties as the team’s running backs coach as well as JV basketball coach and track head coach.
However, the administration made the decision this school year to move Coach Buck out of his role as a driver’s education teacher and into the weightroom to serve as the strength coordinator for all RHS athletic teams, both male and female. Each one has a Weight Traning and Conditioning class built into his or her schedule. This move shows a huge commitment by Superintendent Heath Grimes, Principal Jason Goodwin, and Head Football Coach/Athletic Director Mark Heaton to the development of all of our student athletes.
“It is great to see our athletes working together,” said Heaton. “I love that our female athletes are getting quality and consistent off season work now.”
Because the student athletes now lift during the designated class periods, coaches do not have to balance strength training and practice time. They are also very excited about how this program will help their players develop.
Head Boys Basketball Coach Patrick Odom thinks this will greatly benefit his program: “When we are in season, it is so hard to manage time in the weightroom and practice time. Our schedule isn’t a set one because our games fall on different days of the week, so often times weights get neglected just because of time. This schedule definitely helps me in my planning and time management. Buck does a great job developing our football players, and I am excited about how he will bring my players along physically.”
Head Girls Basketball Coach Corey Thomaston is excited that his girls have the opportunity to work with Coach Buck. “Our girls have been blessed with a great opportunity to grow mentally and physically this year. Coach Buckhalter’s weight program and his attention to detail will greatly benefit our overall program!”
Head Softball Coach Kathryn Montgomery is thrilled to have Coach Buck work with her players: “Coach Buck is the ideal strength and conditioning coach. He has the best interest of each student-athlete in mind, has the skill set and knowledge needed for the job, and has the personality and demanor to make it all come together. He will push them mentally and physically, and without a doubt, will increase their strength and stamina. As a whole, the Lady Golden Tigers softball team will benefit greatly from the newly implemented weight program.”
The RHS athletic department is so thankful that Coach Buckhalter has accepted this role. His dedication to our student-athletes is much appreciated.
