The Golden Tigers football team got in the win column with a 42-21 road victory against the St. John Paul Catholic Falcons on Friday night.
Senior Bernard Phinizee had a huge night for Russellville. He took the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. After JPII tied the game up at 7-7, the senior took the ensuing kickoff for another score–this time for 90 yards.
In the second quarter, the Golden Tigers extended their lead to 21-7 with a 7 yard touchdown strike from freshman quarterback Luke Barnwell to senior receiver Robert Hamilton. The Falcons cut the lead to 21-14 in the quarter, but Barnwell found Hamilton again for a 31 yard touchdown up the left sideline to take a 28-14 lead into halftime.
The Falcons would again cut the lead to 28-21 in the third quarter. Barnwell pushed the Golden Tiger lead back out to fourteen when he found senior Logan Jones for an 8 yard touchdown.
Phinizee finished the scoring in the fourth with a 7 yard touch down run behind the blocks of seniors Ondre Armstead and John David Aycock. Kener Perez was 6 for 6 on PATs for the evening.
The Golden Tigers will return home on Friday night as they take on region opponent Brooks High School. Kickoff is slated for 7pm at Golden Tigers Stadium.
