The Russellville boys basketball team started the 2017-18 season with a 62-55 road victory against the Colbert County Indians in Leighton.
The Golden Tigers jumped out to a 15-9 lead in the first quarter, sparked by junior guard Devin Buckhalter’s two three-point baskets in the period. The lead would increase for the visitors to 37-25 at halftime. Buckhalter added seven more points in the second quarter, including two more threes. Junior guard Lucas McNutt added nine points in the quarter, burying two threes of his own.
The third quarter was unkind to RHS. The Golden Tigers went over six minutes without scoring a point to open up the second half, allowing Colbert County to outscore RHS 15-4 in the quarter. The Indians took a 41-40 lead into the final period.
The Golden Tigers lived at the free throw line in the fourth quarter, scoring fifteen of their twenty-one points from the charity stripe. McNutt’s fourth three of the evening and a runner from Buckhalter were the only field goals scored in the period.
McNutt was the leading scorer for RHS withi 27 points. Buckhalter was right behind him with 20 points of his own. Senior center Calen Bragwell added nine points on the evening.
The Golden Tigers (1-0) will return to action after Thanksgiving. They will travel to Hamilton on Monday, November 27. The night starts with the freshmen boys at 3:30pm. They will be followed by the JV girls, JV boys, varsity girls, and varsity boys.
